Volume II Notes — July 2026

This is a snapshot of the binder in July 2026, not a permanent set of rules. The stable theme definitions live in Core Themes; these notes record what the photographed Volume II pages need next.

The Power Distinction

Superseded 2026-08-02. This section originally split Legendary Bearing from Enduring Presence along authority now versus time witnessed. That test was retired: both photographed Enduring Presence pages were built on completeness and containment, not on accumulated time, and the canonical definition in Core Themes was rewritten to match what the binder actually holds. The current test is encounter versus containment — staged for a viewer, or simply held whole. See docs/ledger.md, 2026-08-02.

The Enduring Presence audit below is superseded with it. The Quiet Familiarity and Threshold audits are unaffected and still stand.

Legendary Bearing — Authority Encountered

The scene presents power as something met: scale, posture, confrontation, ceremony, or arrival.

Usually present:

• Monumental scale or low viewing angle
• Commanding eye contact or posture
• Ceremonial, confrontational, or awe-filled framing
• A sense of arrival, revelation, or audience

Question: Is the image staging an encounter with this power?

Enduring Presence — Power Held Whole

The Pokemon is complete rather than becoming. Its power is contained rather than expressed, and nothing in the composition asks to be witnessed.

Usually present:

• A finished, unhurried pose
• Force implied but not discharged
• Stillness without spectacle
• Containment: sealed, ringed, self-enclosed

Question: Is the power simply being held?

Tie-Breaker

Both themes show power that is already complete. If the composition stages an encounter — someone or something to meet it — choose Legendary Bearing. If the power is held, still and unwitnessed, choose Enduring Presence.

Quiet Familiarity Audit

The existing pages communicate gentleness, but too many cards are peaceful outdoor portraits. That signal belongs more naturally to Calm in Nature.

What the Current Pages Need

The next useful additions should show at least one of these:

• A repeated household or community routine
• An inhabited interior or clearly tended exterior
• Familiar objects such as furniture, dishes, tools, books, toys, or laundry
• Work, travel, meals, gardening, or rest embedded in daily life
• Behavior possible only because the Pokemon belongs in that place

A peaceful outdoor scene without evidence of routine belongs more naturally in Calm in Nature.

Current Page Plan

Gentle Company: Reconsider cards whose complete signal is simply “Pokemon calmly outdoors.” Keep images that imply belonging, repetition, or a known place.

Familiar Places: Use this as the starting point. Favor interiors, cultivated spaces, familiar objects, and other evidence of routine over preserving the current color balance.

Desired End State

• Page 1 — Home Life: interiors, meals, sleep spaces, play, family, and household routines
• Page 2 — Shared Routine: gardens, shops, work, neighborhood routes, transit, and recurring public life

Threshold Audit

The current page contains movement and atmospheric cards, but the theme now requires a readable boundary. Flying, running, or looking into the distance is insufficient by itself.

What the Current Page Needs

The strongest candidates answer all three questions:

1. What is the boundary?
2. Which side is the Pokemon on?
3. What suggests crossing, arrival, departure, or hesitation?

If any answer is unclear, hold the card rather than placing it.

Strong Boundary Types

• Doorway, gate, window, tunnel, or cave mouth
• Bridge, road, path, stairs, tracks, or platform
• Shoreline, riverbank, water surface, or cliff edge
• Forest edge, city limit, horizon, or weather front
• Dawn, dusk, seasonal change, departure, or return

Current Page Plan

Reassess every pocket and keep cards whose composition visibly divides one state from another. Move generic flight, battle, portrait, fossil, or underwater cards to better themes or the holding box.

Desired End State

• Top row: approaching a boundary
• Middle row: pausing or crossing
• Bottom row: leaving, arriving, or looking back

The page should read as a journey through an edge without becoming a general Journey page.

Enduring Presence Audit

Superseded 2026-08-02. This audit asked both pages to prove accumulated time. Under the current definition — power held whole — they already qualify, and no rebuild is owed. The original text is kept below so the reversal is legible.

Original plan, no longer in force

Relics and Survivors: Build around fossils, ancient forms, and beings visually connected to preservation. Vintage borders can support the idea, but the age of the physical card is not enough by itself.

Witnesses to History: Replace generic heroic poses with scenes containing ruins, artifacts, architecture, weathering, generations, or communities. A modern card can be stronger than a vintage card if the artwork carries more historical weight.

Desired end state was Page 1 — Preserved and Page 2 — Remaining. Neither page was rebuilt toward it, and neither now needs to be.

Review Order

1. Pull obvious Calm in Nature cards from Quiet Familiarity.
2. Pull motion-without-boundary cards from Threshold.
3. Test every Enduring Presence card for evidence of time. Dropped 2026-08-02; both pages qualify under the current definition.
4. Leave empty pockets open until a card clearly fits the revised page.
5. Photograph and reassess the rebuilt spreads before buying replacements.
